About Us

“SLW Dance Company will always strive to make every style of Dance accessible to every kind of person, whether it is in a professional environment or for sheer enjoyment.”

We are a St. Helens (UK) based Dance School who cater for ages 3+ and have been active now for 8 years. We currently teach using the BBO and ADA syllabi and now have over 200 pupils and are steadily growing. This figure makes it all the more astounding that the school is ran by one teacher, Sarah Bester.

Sarah is a qualified Performing Arts Teacher with a BA Hons degree in Dance and English and a PGCE in Performing Arts (Secondary). She is a young teacher whose dream it has always been to teach dance since a very young age. She started out at Winburn School of Dancing where she attended as a pupil for a number of years. Soon Sarah confidently moved into the realms of teaching and tutoring her younger peers. At Manchester Metropolitan University she studied under the likes of Rachel Duerden to advance her personal dancing skills to the limit. During her time on her University course she realised that her true passion was for teaching. Therefore she decided after a short spell out of education to re-enter the library and take on a PGCE at Liverpool Hope University. This year-long education degree gave her a crash course in how to best instil classroom instruction to others.

It took a tweak of initiative to make Sarah realise that opening up on her own was her one true path. In 2010 she took the first step and opened SLW Dance Company up for business. In March 2013 another opportunity presented itself: to open up in her own studios. Slap bang in the middle of St Helens town centre and two doors down from the Theatre Royal where SLW dance shows were held, would be the perfect venue. A brand new studio with mirrors, sprung flooring and Barres would allow for a professional residence for the Dance Company that started only two years before. This opportunity has given her the chance to hone her skills, strengthen her classes and expand her pupil base to unbelievable numbers.

Outside of weekly classes SLW Dance Company has held examinations in which pupils have excelled and have a 100% pass rate. Alongside classroom instruction there have been Award Evenings, Trips to London and Dance-a-thon’s that have further added to pupil’s enjoyment and education in Dance. Many of these events have also lead to SLW raising significant funds for Cancer Research. Finally, the Annual Theatre Show at St. Helens Theatre Royal has allowed Sarah to demonstrate the talent that was so evident within her classes.
